ENID meeting Groningen (NL), 7-9 may, 2019

On 7-9 May 2019, nine network members gathered in Groningen, the Netherlands, for two days of presentations on ongoing research projects (please see the attached programme) and a day’s excursion to a number of sites in Groningen province. Of nine presentations, three were on medieval topics while five others discussed the Early Modern period. Geographically, the conference focused on the Low Countries (three papers), Ireland (two). Italy (two) and Norway (two). The excursion comprised visits of two medieval churches, the Museum Helmantel with paintings of church interiors and a considerable collection of medieval art, the former Protestant church of Houwerzijl that is now a tea parlour, and the church of Warfhuizen, now a hermitage. The programme also included meet & greet’s with the painter Henk Helmantel and Father Hugo, the Netherlands’ only hermit. The conference was hosted by the Foundation of Old Groningen Churches (www.groningerkerken.nl) whose director, Peter Breukink, gave a presentation about the foundation’s work since 1969. The ENID meeting was organized by members Justin Kroesen (secretary) and Jacolien Wubs.

ENID Seminar on «Materiality and Visuality of Cult and Devotion in East and West» in Athens

From 8-12 May, 2017, nine members of ENID convened in Athens around the subject of Materiality and Visuality of Cult and Devotion in East and West. The conference was hosted by the Norwegian Institute in Athens and its coordinator Zarko Tankosić. All presentations focused on material and visual aspects of devotion from the Middle Ages to the present, and many speakers drew a comparison between the Greek East and the Latin West.

The third ENID anthology published

In January 2016, the third ENID anthology was published by Four Courts Press in Dublin.

ENID was co-sponsor of the conference: «Early Modern Catholics in the British Isles and Europe: Integration or Separation?», on the 1-3 July 2015, Ushaw College, Durham, hosted by the Centre for Catholic Studies, Durham University.

Workshop in the Benedictine priory Huysburg, Germany, 19th – 23rd April 2015.

The topic was ‘Lutheran and 16th century Devotion’. The excursions visited Eisleben and Wittenberg, but also visiting Gernrode, Halberstadt, Naumburg and Merseburg, benefitting from being in the middle of ‘Die romanische Strasse’ in former DDR.

Workshop in Museu Episcopal de Vic, Catalonia, 15th – 19th April 2013

The topic was ‘Early Medieval Devotion’. The workshop was hosted by the diocesan museum of Vic with its magnificent collections.

The second ENID anthology published

In March 2012, the second ENID anthology was published by Four Courts Press in Dublin.

Workshop in Pontificio Collegio Irlandese, Villa Irlanda, in Rome, 28th March – 1st April 2011

The topic was ‘Affects and Effects – the Rhetorics of Belief. Devotional Practices and Ideologies, from the Late Medieval Period to the Baroque Era’.

Workshop in the Benedictine abbey Michaelbeurn, Austria, 14th – 18th October 2009

The workshop was a joint venture with the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Bergen. Prof. Dr. Bernd Hamm
of Nürnberg-Erlangen was invited as a lecturer and stayed a couple of days. The topic of the workshop was late medieval devotion.
We hope that the papers read and additional texts on the same topic will form the content of a third Enid anthology.

Film project ENID/University of Bergen 2008

In March 2008, Enid members Georgios Kordis and Henrik v. Achen received funding, 35.000 Euros, for a joint project with the University Museum in Bergen. The project was to make a 30 min. film about the practices and instruments connected with the pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Annunciation on the island of Tinos, the most popular Marian pilgrim site in Greece. Together with anthropologist Dr. Frode Storås from Bergen Museum, filming took place 10th-22nd August. The film was shown publicly on a university conference in Bergen on the 26th March 2010, and later on various international film festivals.

Workshop in Thurles, Ireland, 14-18 January 2008

Hosted by St. Patrick’s college in Thurles, the workshop concentrated on 19th century devotion. Thus, the discussions served the preparation of the second Enid collection of essays, dedicated to the period between the French revolution and Vatican II. The workshop ended in a one day seminar for 60-70 Irish scholars and doctor students on «The Material Culture of Catholic Devotion 1850-1950».

The first ENID anthology published

The introductory collection of articles by ENID-members was published on 22 November 2007 by Århus Unipress, Denmark. The anthology ‘Instruments of devotion’ presents 11 articles by Enid members, and is edited by Henning Laugerud (Oslo, Norway) and Laura Katrine Skinnebach (Bergen, Norway).

Workshop in Drongen, Belgium, 30th October – 3rd November 2006

We met in the Oude Abdij, a Jesuit centre in Drongen, outside Gent. Visits to Antwerp, Gent and Brügge made us aware of the wealth of devotional material in this area.
The next workshop will take place in Thurles, Ireland, in January 2008, focusing on 19th century themes. If we prepare a second anthology on that subject, preliminary papers/articles may be discussed, as we use our ‘critical mass of expertise’ to improve each contribution.

Workshop in Rome, Italy, 7 th – 11 th November 2005

Among other things we had meetings with the Pontifical Council for Culture and its president, cardinal Poupard, with the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, and with the Congregation for Catholic Education and its secretary, archbishop Miller.
It was decided to seek to enlarge Enid to an optimal size of 25-30 members. It was further decided to plan the publication of a series of monographs.

Workshop, Bologna, Italy, 26th-30th October 2004

It has been decided to prepare an initial publication, presenting Enid and the research of the network.

New website open for ENID-network

On the day before Ash Wednesday, 24th February 2004, the web pages of ENID were formally opened and placed on the net.

The web pages intend to combine simplicity with functionality. They must be easy to use, easy to understand, and not contain too much to slow down the navigation.

Though a few areas are still under construction, by and large the web pages are finished, presenting Enid and its work to the benefit of the network itself, but also, hopefully, to the benefit of the society of scholars, and of all people interested in the history of Christian piety and its expressions.

Given time, we hope that the pages will develop in quality, size and usefulness, through accumulation of relevant information.
